Wildcats Defeat Conference Rivals Cameron To Finish Spring Break Trip 8-0

LAWTON, Okla. - Abilene Christian's sixth-ranked men's and women's tennis teams defeated their Lone Star Conference rivals from Cameron Thursday to finish their Spring Break trip a perfect 8-0.

The Wildcats' women's team beat the 14th-ranked Aggies, 8-1, while the men received a three-set win from Michael Morris to edge No. 18 Cameron, 5-4.

Morris' 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Jorge Gerosi was his first at the No. 5 line and lifted the team's record to 12-6 (2-0 LSC).

As for the ACU women, they've now won eight straight since March 2 and enter a two-week break from competition at 16-2 (4-0 LSC).

The Wildcat women began the match with a sweep of doubles. The 21st-ranked tandem of Micah Hermsdorf and Hannah Kelley won its eighth straight match at No. 1, defeating Amanda Moberg and Julia Puckhaber, 8-5.

Julia and Laura Mongin remain unbeaten as a duo at 5-0 after topping Sara Londono and Florencia Tornero, 8-3, and Emily Conrad and Brittney Reed won their fourth straight together, winning 8-6 over Elvira Sholles and Antonia Moberg.

Although the women's team has been accustomed to big victories as of late, Cameron's top-line players would not go away quietly as 25th-ranked Puckhaber pulled a mild upset over No. 12 Hermsdorf at No. 2, and 41st-ranked Amanda Moberg pushed No. 3 Julia Mongin to a third set.

Mongin, however, prevailed in the end to win her seventh straight match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

For Hermsdorf, her 7-6, 6-3 loss was her first this year at No. 2 and snapped a 10-match winning streak at that position.

Further down the lineup card, ACU's No. 3 to 6 line players all won in straight sets. No. 39 Reed beat  Londono at No. 3, 6-3, 6-2, and at No. 4, Laura Mongin defeated Sholles, 6-3, 6-2.

Reed and Mongin remain tied for the team lead in wins with 16, with Mongin having won 12 straight.

Conrad has the team's second longest win streak at 10 after beating Tornero 6-0, 6-3, and Kelley topped Antonia Moberg 6-2, 6-1.

The men's team had a more difficult route to take in beating the Aggies, as it first had to first dig out of a 2-1 hole following doubles. ACU's lone win came at No. 1 as the 22nd-ranked duo of Hans Hach and Nick Plum beat Nicolai Ferrigno and Mateus Campos, 8-2.

Hach and Plum followed that triumph with singles victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions, although neither came as easy as their doubles win.

Hach outlasted Thomas Peixoto 6-2, 7-6 (5) at the top line for a 10th straight win that lifted his season mark to 15-2.

Plum, meanwhile, beat Ferrigno 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, to give ACU a short-lived 4-3 lead. Afterward Cameron tied the score at 4-4 as Mateus Campos defeated Cody McCarty, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot.

With all the matches complete, everyone turned their attention to court No. 5 to see Morris beat the South Central region's 16th-ranked player Gerosi in three sets. The win was Morris' third straight and raised his spring record to 8-8.

For ACU, the 5-4 victory represented its narrowest margin of victory of the season.

ACU's men's team returns to action Friday, March 23 with a home match at noon vs. Tyler College.
