KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Abilene Christian's nationally sixth-ranked men's tennis team defeated Division II Rockhurst of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, 8-1, Wednesday at the Loyola Park Tennis Courts. Winners of three straight, the Wildcats improved to 11-6 with the victory, while the regionally ranked Hawks dropped to 2-2.
ACU won its three doubles matches by scores of 8-5, 8-4, and 8-4, even as head coach
Hutton Jones utilized some fairly new pairings.
Alfredo Desiati and
Nick Plum improved to 2-0 with their 8-4 win at No. 2 over John Lazenby and Yassir El Ghazi, and at No.3,
Cody McCarty and
Michael Morris won their first match as a duo, beating Truit Gray and Shawn Khosla, 8-4.
Competing together for the first time this spring the combo of
Hans Hach and Borja Cortes defeated the tandem of Pawel Grzegrzolka and Rodolfo Gauto-Mariotti, 8-5, at No. 1.
Hach's doubles victory was his 10th at the No. 1 spot and 14th overall this season. He has also won 14 times as a top-line singles player, including nine straight since losing to Kentucky's nationally fifth-ranked Eric Quigley in three sets on Feb. 5
Hach today defeated El Ghazi at No. 1, 6-0, 6-4.
Plum, Cortes, Desiati, and Morris all followed Hach's lead by winning in straight sets. Plum beat Lazenby at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3, while Cortes rolled Grzegrzolka at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1.
Morris scored a 'double bagel' victory over Khosla at No. 6, and Desiati at No. 4 trumped Gauto-Mariotti, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Both Desiati and Cortes each have won four straight. Plum improved to 12-3 with his third straight win.
The Wildcats wrap their Spring Break series of matches Thursday with a dual at Lone Star Conference rival Cameron. The match is slated to start at 2 p.m.
