KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Day two of Abilene Christian's Spring Break trip brought two more victories to its nationally sixth-ranked men's and women's tennis teams as the Wildcats upended their South Central regional foes from Northwest Missouri State Tuesday at the Plaza Tennis Center.
ACU's men's team (10-6, 1-0 Lone Star Conference) beat the 42nd-ranked Bearcats, 7-2, while the women's team pitched a 9-0 shutout.
The ACU women (14-2, 3-0 LSC) have won a season-best six straight matches since their last defeat on Feb. 25 at D1 Eastern Kentucky, and in doing so have outscored their opposition, 49-1. Today's victory also marked ACU's fourth straight shutout and 10th of the spring.
All six Wildcats won in straight sets as no Bearcat player earned more than three points, and the narrowest margin of victory in doubles was an 8-5 win for the top-line tandem of
Hannah Kelley and
Micah Hermsdorf.
Julia and
Laura Mongin won their match at No. 2, 8-1, and
Madelyn Walker and
Brittney Reed won 8-3 at No. 3.
The 21st-ranked duo of Kelley and Hermsdorf has won its last seven matches together at No. 1, while the Mongin sisters remain undefeated at 5-0.
ACU's men's team experienced a little more difficulty in putting away its competition, but still managed to win five of six singles and two of three doubles against the eighth-ranked team in the region.
Alfredo Desiati and Borja Cortes helped the Wildcats escape doubles with a 2-1 lead after edging Guilherme Narducci and Rafael Bugiga, 9-8, and then in singles, Cortes emerged victorious in three sets over Mario Jakovljevic 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Cortes (11-5) has won his last three matches and eight of his last 10.
No. 43 Desiati was one of four Wildcats to win in straight sets along with No. 6
Hans Hach,
Nick Plum, and
Michael Morris, who improved to 6-5 at No. 6 with his 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Luis Altimires.
Hach's victory was his eighth straight at No. 1 singles and lifted his overall record to 13-2. The All-America also has won 13 doubles matches, including his fourth today with Plum.
The Wildcats conclude their trip to Kansas City Wednesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader vs. Rockhurst, and on Thursday they'll face conference rival Cameron in Lawton, Okla.
