Wildcats Keep Cruising With Big Wins Over UMKC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Abilene Christian's nationally sixth-ranked tennis teams began their Spring Break trip with a pair of convincing victories over Missouri-Kansas City at the Plaza Tennis Center.

ACU's women's team again won by shutout, 7-0, its third straight and ninth of the season to improve to 13-2 overall and 6-2 against NCAA DI competition. UMKC is a member of the 10-team Summit League.

Winners of five of its last seven, ACU's men's team improved to 9-6 overall with a 6-1 win over the 'Roos.

The men began their dual by winning a hard-fought doubles point in which they were forced to come back from a match down.

UMKC's No. 3 pairing of  Tomas Patino and Conner Edwards downed Michael Morris and Cody McCarty, 8-3.  The Wildcats, though, eventually prevailed behind an 8-4 win at No. 1 and 9-7 victory at No. 2.

Hans Hach and Nick Plum took down Grant Fleming and Cameron Schoenhofer at the No. 1 line to even the series, and then Alfredo Desiati and Borja Cortes captured the point at No. 2 after beating Gustavo Guerin and Abdul Alawadhi. Cortes and Desiati together improved to 4-1 when competing at No. 2, while Hach's doubles win was his team-leading 12th of the season - all at No. 1.

Hach also continued his winning ways in singles and raised his mark to 12-2 after defeating Fleming at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-2. His win was one of five straight-set triumphs for the Wildcats and was joined by Cortes at No.2, Plum at No. 3, Desiati at No. 4, and McCarty at No. 6.

Cortes has won two straight at No. 2 after starting the spring at No. 4, where he is 4-4 on the year. Plum and Desiati improved their records to 10-3 and 8-6, respectively.

For the ACU women today's win was a clean sweep although Micah Hermsdorf was pushed to a third set at No. 2 by Laura Bouet before ultimately prevailing, 7-5, 6-3, 10-6. Hannah Kelley also was challenged at No. 6 by  Jillian Yakominich, but still came through with a straight-set win, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Kelley remains undefeated at No. 6 (5-0) and is 7-1 on the season. Hermsdorf - the No. 12 player in DII - is now 13-2 (9-0 at No. 2) and in the midst of a five-match winning streak.

Elsewhere in singles, third-ranked Julia Mongin at No. 1 defeated Eva Dalvai (UMKC) 7-5, 6-1, to improve to 8-1, and No. 39 Brittney Reed rolled over Amelie Amsallem at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1, for her 13th win.

Laura Mongin and Emily Conrad kept pace with Hermsdorf and Reed for the team lead in wins with their victories at 4 and 5 singles.

The Wildcats return to action Tuesday with a morning doubleheader at Northwest Missouri State.
