ABILENE - The sixth-ranked Abilene Christian women's tennis team dominated its competition Sunday afternoon at the Teague Events Center, defeating possible future DI conference foe Sam Houston State, 6-1, and Texas-Permian Basin, 9-0.
The victories improved the Wildcats' season record to 4-0, but they'll be on the road for close to a month starting with next weekend's trip in which they'll face
Southland Conference schools Nicholls State, Lamar, and McNeese State, as well as Louisiana Lafayette of the Sun Belt Conference.
Against the Bearkats, the Wildcats won their No. 3 to 6 singles matches in straight sets on top of receiving a pair of comeback wins from third-ranked Julia Mongin at No. 1 and 13th-ranked Micah Hermsdorf at No. 2.
Down a set to Imke Jagau, Mongin captured the second set 6-4 before cruising in the third, 6-1. Hermsdorf dropped her first set to Sheridan Currie, 6-2, and then rolled off 6-3 and 6-2 set victories.
The Wildcats began their Sam Houston match with a doubles sweep, which included an 8-2 win at No. 1 from the 24th-ranked tandem of Julia and Laura Mongin against Currie and Natalie Petaia.
Hermsdorf and
Madelyn Walker defeated Tatyana Postnikova and Nadia Dubyanskaya at No. 2, 8-4, and at the No. 3 spot,
Emily Conrad and
Brittney Reed beat Olivia Battye and Imke, 8-6.
ACU's match against Permian Basin was almost a carbon copy of Saturday's 9-0 win vs. the first-year Texas A&M-Kingsville program, as the Wildcats lost just one point in singles play and dropped just three points in doubles.
