ABILENE - The No. 6 Abilene Christian men's tennis team is coming home with a 3-2 record after completing its first road trip of the season Sunday night in Lexington, Ky., with a 7-0 loss to seventh-ranked Kentucky.
Kentucky won both doubles matches by matching 8-2 scores and captured five of six singles contest in straight sets. The lone exception was at No. 1 singles where sixth-ranked
Hans Hach lost in three sets to fifth-ranked Eric Quiqley, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
"Hans went to work and gained his (Quiqley) respect very quickly," head coach
Hutton Jones said, "and at some points was very close to getting the job done. Hans has taken some huge steps from last fall and is so much more emotionally mature. He was very impressive this weekend."
Jones also came away impressed by No. 43
Alfredo Desiati's performance at No. 2 singles vs. #111 Alejandro Gomez despite his losing the match 6-4, 6-1.
"Earlier in the day their No. 2 beat a guy from Pepperdine, 6-1, 6-1, and then Alfredo kept it close the whole way in the first set," he said.
ACU's season-opening weekend throughout the Bluegrass State also included a doubleheader split Saturday as the Wildcats followed a 5-2 loss to Eastern Kentucky with a 6-3 triumph over Northern Kentucky.
Against the Colonels, three set wins were attained by Hach and
Nick Plum at No.1 and 5 singles, and then vs. the Norse, the Wildcats won four of six singles and two of three doubles.
"All the teams we played are very good," Jones said. "and while its hard playing four matches in two days, I have to put our kids in tough situations or we might get beat later. It was a positive experience to have played Kentucky, and it was even better to see the guys step it up in their last match."
Hach and Plum registered the best singles marks of the weekend as each posted a 4-1 win-loss record. Desiati went 3-2, while newcomers Borja Cortes and
Guilherme Gesser went 2-3.
Jones utilized 10 different doubles combinations with Hach and Desiati and the Plum Brothers (Nick and Kyle) leading the way with 2-0 records.
ACU returns to action next weekend with a three-day, five-match trip that will pit them against Nicholls State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Rice, Prairie View A&M, and Lamar.
