ABILENE - The sixth-ranked Abilene Christian men's tennis team split a Saturday doubleheader played at Rice University's Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. The Wildcats began their day with a 5-0 win over Prairie View A&M before falling 5-1 to the 36th-ranked Owls.
The decisions bring ACU's win-loss record to 4-3 heading into Sunday's match vs. Lamar.
Senior
Nick Plum, competing at the No. 3 position, was the only Wildcat to win both his singles matches. Plum first defeated Prairie View's Kristen Powell, 6-1, 6-0, and then gutted out a three-set triumph over Rice's Philipp Seifert 7-6 (4), 2-6, 11-9 to raise his spring season record to 6-1.
Plum also won his lone doubles contest, teaming up with
Alfredo Desiati at No. 2 to defeat the Panther duo of Jonathan Dingle and Kristen Powell, 8-2.
In the remaining two doubles matches, No. 1
Hans Hach and
Guilherme Gesser beat Karim Fotso and Ronald Chidzikwe, 8-5, and No. 3
Kyle Plum and
Michael Morris topped Trenton Johnson and David Aldaz, 8-5.
Hach, Plum, and Cortes all won in straight sets vs. their Prairie View opposition, and No. 43 Desiati came back from a set down at No. 2 to beat Fotso 3-6, 6-1, 10-2.
ACU did not have the same luck against the Owls in losing five of six singles matches. Four Wildcats lost in straight sets, while Gesser battled Andy Wang to a third set at No. 5 before ultimately bowing, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
The Wildcats did not play doubles against Rice, nor did they play at No. 4 and 5 singles vs. Prairie View.
