ABILENE – The No. 24 Abilene Christian Track and Field teams begin 2012 with an appearance at the Texas Tech Open, which takes place this weekend at the Red Raiders' Athletic Training Center.
Field events begin Friday at 5 p.m. with the women's weight throw. Races start an hour later with the women's distance medley relay.
Saturday's action kicks off at 10 a.m. with the women's triple jump followed by shot put and pole vault, while running commences at 11 a.m. with the prelims of the women's 55-meter hurdles. Running events will follow a rolling schedule.
The Wildcats are one of 25 squads slated to compete, joining Lone Star Conference rivals Angelo State, Incarnate Word, A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M, and neighboring Abilene schools Hardin Simmons and McMurry.
Attending NCAA Division I schools will include SMU (women) and UT-San Antonio (men/women) in addition to the Red Raiders.
The Wildcats are coming off a solid appearance at December's Air Force Academy's Blue and Silver Open, where senior All-American Nick Jones qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put after recording a winning distance of 18.24 meters.
In addition to Jones' performance, eight additional Wildcats recorded NCAA provisional marks in their respective events, including the men's 4x400-meter relay, Levance Williams (triple jump), Paris Robertson (60m), Shennae Steele (60m) and Lexus Williams (60m hurdles).
