ABILENE – Abilene Christian women's tennis players Julia Mongin and Micah Hermsdorf will continue to play vs. elite DI opposition this weekend when they visit Bloomington, Ind., for the adidas Hoosier Classic.
The three-day tournament features nine nationally ranked singles players among the teams being sent by Georgia, Indiana, Kansas State and Notre Dame. Competitors will be split between four flights of singles and one flight of doubles.
ACU head coach Hutton Jones said his team was invited by current Indiana assistant coach and former Wildcat Ramiro Azcui.
A successful four-year tennis player at ACU, Azcui was named to the All-Lone Star Conference squad in both singles and doubles from 1984-1987. He also led the team to a pair of top-12 DII appearances before returning to Abilene as an assistant coach for one season.
“We're always looking for opportunities for our players and Ramiro called a few months ago to see if we were interested in coming to Indiana,” said Jones. “The depth at this tournament is amazing and we'll probably get to face some ranked players regardless of what flight we're assigned.”
Hermsdorf is coming off a successful run at Oklahoma's Sooner Fall Invitational where she won both the A Singles and B Doubles flight championships, while Mongin competed at the prestigious Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational. Mongin won the singles title at Midland in 2010, but was limited to three matches last weekend after being eliminated in three sets by Rice's Katie Gater.
“Julia didn't play many matches last week, so this tournament will serve as a good warm-up for regionals,” Jones said. “This is a great experience for both her and Micah and I think they're ready for it.”
Play begins at Indiana Friday at 11 a.m. and concludes Sunday morning with the finals of the singles bracket.
