OKLAHOMA CITY – After capturing their respective Lone Star Conference regular-season championships, the ACU men's and women's tennis teams are each the No. 1 seed in their respective draws for this weekend's Lone Star Conference Tennis Championships.
The tournament will get started Friday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center with the finals set for Saturday.
The ACU women are 18-7 on the season and ranked No. 6 in the nation and No. 1 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region. The Wildcats are the three-time defending LSC champion and will be seeking their 23rd conference title this weekend.
The Wildcats have been dominant within the conference and region this season, posting eight shutout wins, and went 66-6 in eight LSC matches as the Wildcats rolled to an 8-0 league record.
The Wildcats will open play in the conference tournament at 9:30 a.m. Friday against No. 8 seed Southeastern Oklahoma. A win there would send the Wildcats to the 2 p.m. semifinals against either No. 4 seed Central Oklahoma or No. 5 seed Northeastern State.
The women's championship match is set for Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
On the men's side, the Wildcats (16-9 on the season) have been as dominant as their counterparts on the women's side, and they are coming off a dominating 5-4 win against Cameron last week that clinched the regular-season championship.
ACU was 5-0 in conference play, winning 36 of 45 matches with its only close match on the season the 5-4 win over Cameron. The Wildcats enter the tournament ranked No. 7 in the country and No. 2 in the region.
As the top seed in the field, the Wildcats will receive a first-round bye before playing in Friday's 1 p.m. semifinals against either No. 4 seed Incarnate Word or No. 5 seed East Central. No. 2 seed Midwestern State will play in Friday's 1 p.m. semifinals against the winner of Friday morning's match between No. 3 seed Cameron and No. 6 seed Southeastern Oklahoma State.
The men's championship match is also set for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. ACU is the two-time defending champion, and this year will be trying to win its third straight title and 12th overall since 1988.
