ABILENE – Ninth-ranked St. Mary's scored three runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh Wednesday afternoon as the Rattlers knocked off ACU, 6-2, in non-conference baseball action at Crutcher Scott Field.
The Rattlers improve to 31-8 overall, while the struggling Wildcats fall to 21-16. ACU will be in Canyon this weekend for a key three-game series against West Texas A&M. The Wildcats and Buffaloes are tied for sixth place in the Lone Star Conference with only the top six teams in the league qualifying for the conference tournament, which will be played May 7-10 at ACU.
St. Mary's starting pitcher went five innings, scattering four hits and two runs en route to picking up the win and improving to 6-0.
Cameron Watten, meanwhile, gave up five hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss to fall to 1-2.
With the game tied 1-1 going to the sixth inning, Weston Baros singled to drive in the go-ahead run. Ryan Morrow followed with a bunt single that drove in a run, and Greg Herbst finished the scoring with a single to center field.
In the seventh, Morrow had an RBI single and Herbst drew a bases-loaded walk that capped the scoring.
