Volleyball Falls At Midwestern

WICHITA FALLS, Kan. – The Abilene Christian volleyball team fell to .500 on the season (10-10, 4-4 LSC) after suffering a 3-0 loss at Midwestern State Thursday night. The Mustangs (12-6, 4-5) won by scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 25-15.
Shelbi Stewart hit. 478 and led all players with 13 kills. Jennie Hutt again paced the Wildcat offense with nine kills; finished second to Kelsie Edwards (14) with 12 digs and was one of three ACU players with three blocks.
ACU was in position several times to win the first set in leading, 24-22, but then dropped the next four points as MSU received kills from Stewart, Miranda Byrd and Brandi Flores. The Mustangs also were helped by an unforced error that brought them to match point.
The Wildcats made 14 errors on the night in finishing with a .133 hitting percentage, while MSU hit .258.
Miscues continued to plague ACU in the third set as the Mustangs jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 10-3. Of MSU's first 11 points, five of them came off various Wildcat errors. Hutt tried to bring ACU back from a six-point deficit with consecutive kills, but couldn't get her team any closer than 10-6 and was shutout the rest of the way.
ACU hung with the Mustangs through the first 18 points (9-9) of the second set but were unable to overcome an 11-3 run during which the home team strung together three straight kills by Byrd, Kristan Aduddell and Hillary White. The Wildcats then fell further behind with errors by Hutt and Caley Johnson putting them into a five-point hole.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday for a 2 p.m. match at Cameron.
