ACU rallies past Texas Woman's

Box Score

DENTON – ACU scored two goals inside the final five minutes of the match Friday afternoon to escape with a 2-1 win over Texas Woman's University in Lone Star Conference women's soccer action.

The win pushes the nation's second-ranked team to 14-0-1 overall and 10-0-1 in the LSC and clinches at worst a tie for the LSC regular-season championship.  ACU can clinch the conference's outright regular-season title and the right to host the LSC Post-Season Tournament with one more win or one Midwestern State loss.

ACU plays at Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday, while Midwestern State plays at Texas Woman's.  ACU beat Commerce, 4-1, on Oct. 2 in Abilene.

Texas Woman's took a 1-0 lead in the first half with Candice Davies scored on an assist from Brittany Martin at the 38:51 mark, and that 1-0 lead appeared as if it might hold up.

But the Wildcats – who out-shot Texas Woman's 23-13 – started firing at the goal in the second half, peppering goalkeeper Beatrice Soto with 23 shots, including 12 on goal.

Soto held up under the barrage until the 86th minute when the Wildcats finally got a push upfield.  Ashley Craig found Stephanie Heron with a pass, and Heron put it past Soto to tie the match at the 85:30 mark of the match.

It didn't take the Wildcats nearly as long to come up with their next goal.

With less than one minute left in the match,  Craig again found herself with the ball on her foot, looking for a teammate.  She found Whitley Lindholm, who put the ball past Soto to give ACU a 2-1 lead at the 89:09 mark, and the ACU defense held on for the final 51 seconds.

ACU's defense only allowed eight shots on goal, and Elliott London stood tall, stopping seven shots, including a barrage of three straight shots by Brittany Martin  in the 15th minute of a scoreless first half.
