ACU Takes Series From Rambelles

ABILENE – After struggling much of the first half of the season the ACU Softball Wildcats responded with their biggest win of the season Saturday in a 7-5 win over #17 Angelo State. The win gave ACU their first series win since 2006 and only second in program history over the Rambelles at Wells Field.

ACU used their biggest inning of the season as they hung seven runs on the Rambelles in the fourth inning. Four of the runs were charged to starter April Haywood, but the inning was highlighted by a three-run homerun by Nancy Sawyers. Sawyers drilled the 3-1 pitch over the right field wall to make the score, 5-2.

Shawna Barrow was 3-for-3 on the day with two doubles scoring a run and reaching on a walk as she saw her average climb above the .400 mark. She also stole a base giving her 40 on the season, while only being caught twice in 42 attempts. Barrow is also more than half way to the LSC mark of 71 in a season.

The conference leader in doubles Jenny Kulp added two singles and a pair of RBIs both coming in her second at-bat of the inning. Candice Miller also added a double and two RBIs in the inning for ACU.

Shelby Hall picked up her ninth win and Brittany Rexroat earned her first save of the season for the Wildcats in the win. Hall was charged with all five runs, but Rexroat worked the last out of the fifth inning and a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.

Angelo State picked up a run to start the game and would add another in the fourth before ACU exploded for seven in the bottom half. The Rambelles threatened in the fifth including a homerun from Sara DeMoss, but Rexroat stranded two ASU runners to end the threat and preserve the win.

The win for ACU was their second series win of the season. The Wildcats have also now won six of their last ten games as they look for their 20th win next weekend at Tarleton State. The Lone Star Conference series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday and conclude with a single game on Saturday. First pitch for Friday is set for 2 p.m. with noon start on Saturday.
