ABILENE -- The ACU Wildcats opened the home portion of their 2009 schedule Friday with a pair of decisive victories on the first day of the ACU Volleyball Classic at Moody Coliseum.
The Wildcats (3-3) knocked off Western State (Colo.), 3-1, early Friday, and then topped Pittsburg State (Kan.) by the same score Friday evening. The tournament will conclude with seven matches on Saturday with ACU taking on Western New Mexico at 3 p.m. and Incarnate Word at 7 p.m.
The ACU-Pitt State match was one of the most anticipated of the day, and the Wildcats lived up to their billing as one of the top teams in the region as they whipped the Gorillas, 25-14, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21.
Jordan Schilling -- who played brilliantly on the day -- had 17 kills and 13 digs to go along with three service aces to lead the Wildcats. She wasn't alone, though, as Jennie Hutt had 13 kills and 13 digs, while Michelle Bacon had 11 kills. Junior middle blocker Shawna Hines -- one of the top defenders in the nation -- had seven total blocks to go along with nine kills as ACU racked up 11 total blocks to just four for the Gorillas.
Junior setter Ijeoma Moronu had 53 assists, 13 digs and four kills as she continued her all-around solid play.
In the opener on Friday, the Wildcats had little trouble with the Mountaineers from Western State, winning 25-10, 25-15, 25-27, 25-16.
Hutt had 14 kills and six digs, while Schilling had 13 kills, 15 digs and five service aces. Hines added 10 kills and six total blocks as ACU had seven blocks to five for Western State. Ijeoma had 41 assists, four kills and six digs in the win over Western State.
