ACU freshman wins Coody title

ABILENE -- ACU freshman golfer Adam Carpenter won the individual medalist title Tuesday at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate tournament, which was played at Diamondback Golf Club.

Carpenter fired back-to-back rounds of 2-under-par 69 for a 138 total, which put him in a three-way tie for first with Chad Bryant of Midwestern State and Drew Koonce of Texas Wesleyan.

Carpenter, though, out-lasted both Bryant and Koonce in a playoff, winning on the fourth hole of the playoff to take the individual championship in his first collegiate tournament.

Newman (Kan.) and Texas Wesleyan ended up in a tie for the team championship (2-over-par 70) at the end of 36 holes.  Newman, though, won the team championship on the second hole of the team playoff.

Midwestern State (571) finished third, followed by Cameron (572) and St. Mary's (573).

The ACU Wildcats moved up from a tie for 11th after the first round to finish in seventh.  The Wildcats were led by the Carpenter twins, Adam and Alex.  Adam Carpenter won the individual championship with Alex Carpenter finishing in a tie for 17th at 1-over-par 143.

Cyril Bouniol finished tied for 34th at 4-over-par 146 with Kyle Dickerson (tied for 48th, 150) and Kregg Wood (tied for 68th, 157) rounding out the Wildcats' No. 1 team.

The ACU JV team finished 12th, but Sam Smith finished tied for 12th in the individual medalist race with an even-par 142.  Tyler Sheppard finished tied for 20th at 2-over-par 144.
