ABILENE – The Wildcats women's tennis team will try to find their stroke early as they open the season this weekend in the Annual ACU Wal-Mart Open. The first fall tournament for ACU will serve as a measuring point where they are early.
Although the tournament falls after Labor Day this year a good number of teams will still be in attendance including: Hardin-Simmons, McMurry University, and junior college programs Eastfield, and North Central Texas.
The women will be led by junior Jaclyn Walker who returns after playing as the Wildcats number one for portions of last season. She is asked to replace Irene Squillaci who along with Walker helped ACU to a 27-6 finish and a semifinal run in both singles and doubles.
“We will be younger than normal, but Jaclyn had a lot of success last season playing behind Irene,” said head coach Hutton Jones.
The Wildcats will also look for senior Dina Pavlin who has been in the top five every year at ACU. Along with Pavlin return juniors Natalie Friend and Lauren White, and sophomores Cassie Carver and Callen Huey to round out the Wildcats returners.
Other members to Coach Jones' squad who will be fighting for a spot include two freshmen. Madison Hudson from Abilene and Hannah Kelley, whose twin brother Jon is a freshmen on the men's team.
