ABILENE -- Abilene Christian running back Bernard Scott ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns and caught six passes for 131 yards and one touchdown Saturday afternoon as the fourth-ranked Wildcats rolled past Texas A&M-Commerce, 45-14, in a Lone Star Conference game at Shotwell Stadium.
The Wildcats (2-0 overall, 1-0 in the LSC) jumped on top of the Lions (1-2 overall, 1-1 in the LSC) quickly with three first-quarter touchdowns on their way to a 35-0 halftime lead. ACU then put it on cruise control in the second half as backups on both sides of the ball dominated the final 30 minutes.
Scott -- last year's runner-up for the Harlon Hill Trophy signifying the best player in NCAA Division II football -- topped the 100-yard rushing mark for the 13th time in 15 career games with the Wildcats, and had 100 yards receiving for the first time in his career. He got the Wildcats on the board early in the game when he took a swing pass from Billy Malone and took it in from 34 yards out with 11:09 left in the first quarter.
He scored his second touchdown of the day just a few minutes later when he blew through a hole and went 45 yards for his first rushing touchdown, giving ACU a 14-0 lead with 8:55 left in the first quarter. A Mike Kern fumble recovery and 35-yard return for a touchdown gave ACU a 21-0 lead with 3:53 left in the first quarter.
After ACU took a 35-0 lead to the half, Scott capped his day with a 14-yard touchdown run to push the Wildcat lead to 42-0 with 12:55 left in the third quarter.
Malone threw for 390 yards and two scores as he became the school's all-time leader in 300-yard passing game with 15. His two touchdown passes give him 84 for his career, tying him with former Wildcat quarterback Rex Lamberti as the all-time touchdown pass leader in both ACU and Lone Star Conference history.
