Wildcats send three to singles semifinals at ITA regional

ABILENE -- The ACU women's tennis team enjoyed a big day at the Wilson / ITA South Central Region Tennis Tournament on Saturday as three of its four singles players advanced to Sunday's semifinals, and its top-ranked doubles advanced to Sunday's championship match.
On the singles side, the top two seeds -- No. 1 Zuzanna Osinska of Northeastern State and No. 2 Irene Squillaci of ACU -- each advanced into Sunday's semifinals, as did ACU sophomore Jaclyn Walker and ACU's Sarah Drummond.
Osinska knocked off ACU's Dina Pavlin in the quarterfinals, rallying from down 4-3 in the first set to win 6-4 and then taking the second set, 7-5. Walker -- last year's surprise singles finalist as a freshman -- knocked off Irene George of Cameron, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals to advance into Sunday's semifinals. She'll face Osinska at 9 a.m. in a semifinal match, while Squillaci will take on Drummond in the other semifinal match.
In doubles play, the top-seeded duo of Squillaci and Walker coasted through two rounds on Saturday into Sunday's 2 p.m. championship match. In the quarterfinals they knocked off the Central Oklahoma tandem of Lacy Caldwell and Audrey Donovan, 7-6, 6-2, before beating the St. Edward's tandem of Regina Del Bosque and Audrey Tompkins, 6-3, 6-4.
Osinska and her doubles teammate Emina Spirtovic beat Mary Bain and Elizabeth Jacobi of St. Edward's, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4, in the quarterfinals, and then knocked off Pavlin and Drummond in the semifinals, 6-4, 7-5. Pavlin and Drummond reached the semifinals with a thrilling 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 quarterfinals win over the East Central duo of Julia Arguello and Claudia Gamarra. The doubles final is set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Eager Tennis Center on the ACU campus.
