SAN ANTONIO ? One day after opening their season with three victories, the 19th-ranked ACU softball team dropped two games in the St. Mary's Spring Classic, falling to the host school and Southern Arkansas.
The Wildcats ? who on Friday beat Lone Star Conference rivals Midwestern State, Southeastern Oklahoma State and Cameron by a outscoring the three 7-1 ? managed just one run in the two losses, falling to St. Mary's 2-0 and 2-1 to Southern Arkansas.
ACU was unable to get key hits when needed as the Wildcats left eight runners on base against St. Mary's and 11 on base against Southern Arkansas.
The Wildcats' unusual offensive outage wasted a pair of solid pitching outings by Ashley Bailey and Sarah Vidalin. Bailey went six innings and allowed just six hits against St. Mary's, while Vidalin went six innings and allowed just three hits and struck out seven against Southern Arkansas. Bailey, who was 1-1 with a 1.38 ERA in two games in San Antonio, was named to the all-tournament team.
ACU will return to action Friday in the CBS Insurance Classic in Abilene as it takes on St. Mary's at 4 p.m. at Wells Field, followed by a 6:30 p.m. game against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
