ABILENE -- Junior quarterback Billy Malone threw for 343 yards and four touchdowns in the first half Saturday night and then sat out the second half as the 15th-ranked Wildcats rolled to a 58-7 Lone Star Conference victory over Northeastern State at Shotwell Stadium.
The Wildcats' fifth straight win pushes their record to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the LSC, while the RiverHawks fall to 1-5 and 1-4. ACU will return to action Saturday in San Angelo when it takes on Angelo State at 6 p.m.
The 58 points scored by the Wildcats were the most scored by an ACU football team since Oct. 10, 1970, when the Wildcats beat Eastern New Mexico, 61-7. For Malone, it was an almost perfect first half of football as he completed 17 of 24 passes and led ACU to a 51-0 lead at the break.
He threw touchdown passes of 15, 21, 18 and 75 yards as the Wildcats rolled to what is believed to be a school record for points in a half. Backup running back Kebron Lampkin scored three touchdowns as he reached the end zone on a 15-yard scoring pass, a 1-yard run and a 75-yard pass from Malone. The 75-yard scoring pass came on a third-down screen pass with just 2:15 left in the first half. Lampkin took the pass from Malone, weaved his way in and out of traffic until he found a lane down the left sideline and took it to the house to give the Wildcats a 51-0 lead.
The Wildcats were the epitomy of a quick-strike offense in the first half when they scored on their first eight drives, including a field goal on the first drive and then seven straight touchdowns. ACU scored touchdowns on three plays, five plays, five plays, 11 plays, one play, seven plays and three plays and no drive took more than 2:53 off the game clock, while six of the seven drives covered at least 34 yards.
ACU head coach Chris Thomsen emptied the bench in the second half as all 22 starters were on the bench for most of the final 30 minutes. Running back Patrick Washington scored ACU's final touchdown with 2:40 left in the game on a 2-yard touchdown run. The touchdown capped a 21-yard drive that was set up by a 39-yard interception return by Josh Wise.
ACU's defense limited the RiverHawks to just 243 yards of total offense, including just 87 through the air. The Wildcats picked off four passes as Josh Henry, E.J. Whitley, Tony Harp and Wise each came up with interceptions off two Northeastern State quarterbacks.
