ACU women dominate ITA's first day

For the Wildcats, Lana Pavlin, Meagan Brown, Dina Pavlin, Aina Rafolo, Sarah Drummond, third-seeded Irene Squillaci and Holly Lindloff all advanced into Saturday morning's Round of 16.

“Our women played really great all day (today),” ACU head coach Hutton Jones said. “You'd never really think that we'd get seven of eight players into the third round, but they all responded to the challenge of the tournament.”

Also moving into the doubles quarterfinals were the ACU teams of Lindloff and Rafolo and Lana Pavlin and Irene Squillaci, who are the second-seeded team in the tournament.
On the men's side, two Wildcat players - George Carstens and Juan Nunez ? advanced into Saturday's singles third round. Carstens had to go three sets in his second-round match against Dave Knaszar of Incarnate Word before winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Carstens will take on second-seeded Walter Valarezo of St. Edward's at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at ACU.
Nunez, meanwhile, received a first-round bye as the eighth seed in the singles draw, and then he coasted past Jake McMindes of Incarnate Word, 6-0, 6-1, to earn his spot in the third round. Nunez will take on Brett Powers of St. Edward's at 9 a.m. Saturday at ACU.
The biggest surprise of the tournament's first round came in men's singles where No. 1 seed Brett Emerson of
In the men's doubles bracket, Emerson and teammate Zach Dillard -- the top-seeded doubles team in the field ? easily advanced into the quarterfinal round with a straight-sets win over Tommy Collins and Bernard Lancaster of St. Edward's. Dillard and Emerson will face the unseeded ACU team of Luke Hawk and Bryce Hicks, who beat seventh-seeded Chase Holliday and Dave Knaszar of Incarnate Word, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.
Two other ACU teams moved into the quarterfinal round as the team of Carstens and Nunez ? the third-seeded team in the field ? and Kevin Beedy and Ryan Hudson each advanced to Saturday afternoon's 5:15 p.m. quarterfinal matches.
The tournament will continue Saturday and Sunday with championship matches in all four flights set for Sunday afternoon at ACU.
