ACU opens with 4-1 mark
Wildcats split opening matches; dominate ACU Indoor Classic
ABILENE -- The ninth-ranked ACU women's tennis team opened its season last week by winning four of its five matches, including a dominating 3-0 sweep through the ACU Indoor Classic.
ACU opened the season last Wednesday with a two-match split against Eastern New Mexico and Texas Tech. ACU dominated the Zias with a 9-0 win as it didn't lose a set in the match. ACU then lost to Texas Tech, falling to the Red Raiders (ranked No. 61 in NCAA Division I women's tennis) by the score of 6-1.
The Wildcats then returned home Friday and ripped through three NCAA Division I opponents, losing just one set in three matches. ACU beat Stephen F. Austin, 6-1, and then beat both Prairie View A&M and Texas-Pan American by 7-0 scores.
Freshman Irene Squillaci -- a freshman from Bolivia -- played No. 1 singles in the Stephen F. Austin and UTPA matches, and won both her matches in straight sets. She beat Laura Harrison of Stephen F. Austin, 7-6, 6-2, and then beat Pan American's Silke Buksik, 6-1, 6-1. She also played three doubles matches on Friday, winning all three.
ACU will return to action this weekend when it plays five matches next weekend in Arkansas and north Texas. ACU will play Henderson State and Central Arkansas on Friday in Hot Springs, Ark., followed by a match Saturday against Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Ark. The Wildcats will play Northeastern State next Sunday in Fort Smith, Ark., followed by a match against Southeastern Oklahoma State in Sherman.
