1950 team to celebrate perfect season
Members of 11-0 team to relive season this weekend
ABILENE -- ACU's 1950 football team will celebrate the 55th anniversary of its Refrigerator Bowl championship season this weekend with a reunion that will conclude Saturday with recognition at halftime of the 2 p.m. football game against Eastern New Mexico.
The 1950 football team -- led by quarterback Ted Sitton, offensive lineman Wally Bullington, running back Alton Green, defensive lineman E.J. "Tiny" Moore and coached by the late Garvin Beauchamp -- won the Texas Conference championship and defeated five defending conference champions that season. The perfect season ended with a 13-7 win over Gustavus Adolphus College in the Refrigerator Bowl, Dec. 2, 1950, in Evansville, Ind.
The Wildcats -- dubbed "The Singing Christians" -- were the only unbeaten team in the nation that season, regardless of level, and the 1950 squad is still the only one in school history to finish a season unblemished. Bullington and Sitton went on to become head football coaches at ACU, as did the late Les Wheeler, who was an all-Texas Conference offensive tackle on the 1950 team. Several others on that team, including Don Smith and Jerry Mullins, went on to coach at ACU and high schools across Texas.
