ACU signs Abilene High post
Maxwell inks binding national letter-of-intent
Abilene High senior post Audrey Maxwell signed a binding national letter-of-intent Wednesday to play collegiately at ACU.
The 6-foot senior center decided to attend ACU instead of giving up basketball to be a student at Baylor University.
''This is a big decision, and I think I made a good one,'' said Maxwell, whose father, Jack Maxwell, is an associate professor and the chair of the ACU art department. ''It's a big load off my shoulders, and I'm looking forward to the fact I will be able to play basketball somewhere after this year.''
A two-time first team all-district selection, Maxwell has started for the Lady Eagles for the past three years. After averaging 10.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game as a sophomore, Maxwell averaged about 10 points and five rebounds per game last season as a junior.
Maxwell scored 14 points and had five rebounds and three steals in AHS' season-opening 81-64 loss to Lubbock Coronado on Tuesday night.
ACU coach Shawna Lavender said Maxwell's potential was too much for ACU to overlook.
''She has a lot of raw ability, has long arms and is really strong,'' said Lavender, who is in her second full season as the Wildcats' head coach. ''She's a good person and a good kid, and I'm looking forward to her being a part of our program.''
