ACU splits doubleheader with LSC-leading Pioneers
McWilliams strikes out 10 in 1-0 win over Texas Woman's
For immediate release 19 April 2002DENTON - The Abilene Christian University softball team split its Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader with division-leading Texas Woman's University, winning the first game 1-0 before dropping the nightcap, 3-1.
In the first game, ACU's Maurine McWilliams (9-16) had one of her best performances of the season, striking out 10 batters while giving up only two hits over seven innings to lead the Wildcats to the 1-0 victory.
Misty Pryer continued an outstanding season at the plate for the Wildcats with the game-winning RBI single in the fifth that scored Hilary Miller from second base.
ACU (11-22, 3-9) did not allow a TWU runner past second base in the contest. However, the Pioneers (40-10, 11-4) took a quick 2-0 lead over Wildcats' starter Jana Presley in he second game and added a late run to salvage the split, 3-1.
TWU ace Brittany Willson pitched a complete game, surrendering only three hits in the contest. Former Abilene High standout J.D. Williams scored the only run for ACU in the fifth inning.
Despite the split, the Pioneers won the South Division crown and the South's top seed in next weekend's LSC tournament in Irving.
The Wildcats will conclude its season against TWU with a doubleheader
starting at 1 p.m. today.
