Biography

2023-2024: Indoors – redshirted, but threw unattached in the Jarvis Scott Open weight throw at Texas
Tech. Outdoors – Competed in 9 meets outdoors in a very busy season. Concentrating largely on the
hammer throw, Sutton won the War Hawk Classic HT at McMurry and finished 2 nd 4 times – the Trinity
Invitational in San Antonio, ACU’s Wes Kittley Invitational, the David Noble Relays in San Angelo (in a PR
distance of 191-2/58.28), and the Joe Gillespie Invitational in Stephenville. Closing out the season,
Sutton finished 4 th in the HT at the WAC Championship, finishing behind Israel Oloyede from Grand
Canyon, who would go on to finish 4 th at the NCAA D-1 Championship in the event.
McMurry University: competed for 4 years for McMurry (including redshirt years outdoors in 2020 and
indoors in 2021 due to the pandemic). In 2021, in the American Southwest Conference, he won the
hammer throw and finished 8 th  in the shot put. In 2022, again in the ASC championship meet, he finished
2 nd  in the HT and 5 th  in the SP. He topped off the 2023 season by winning the ASC HT and finished 5 th  in
the SP. He also received the honor of being an Academic All-American while at McMurry. Sutton leaves
McMurry as the #2 all-time in the hammer throw. His PR’s are: HT – 183-1/55.80m; SP – 46-
11.75/14.32m; and the indoor weight throw – 55-3/16.84m.
 
Before college: Played football each year while a student at Abilene Wylie and was a member of the
2016 team that placed runner-up in the 4A state playoffs under Head Coach and ACU alumni Hugh
Sandifer. Competing in shot put, Sutton placed 3 rd  in the District 5-4A shot put in 2018 and 4 th  in the
district meet in the SP in his senior season in 2019.
 
Personal: Graduated from Abilene Wylie HS in 2019. Sutton comes to ACU as a graduate transfer after
receiving his Bachelors in Political Science from McMurry in May, 2023. He is currently working on his
MA in Communication at ACU. His parents are Pete Welch and Mandy Richmond.

What is your favorite things about ACU? The welcoming nature of the alumni, professors, and staff who
inhabit the University. ACU is one of a kind and I am deeply thankful to be a part of it.
