Biography

 

Trey Watten should be one of the top players in the NCAA_Division II_South Central Region in 2008 after a breakthrough sophomore campaign.  He’ll return to the mound as a starting pitcher, and he’ll also be the starter at third base for most of the season when he’s not on the mound.  2007 (Sophomore):_ Watten was a true dual-threat for the Wildcats, finishing 10-0 on the mound with a 3.00 ERA, while hitting .351 with five home runs and 41 RBI.  In his first season as a pitcher, Watten turned in two of the Wildcats’ best pitching performances of the season, one in the game that clinched the Lone Star Conference South Division title and the other in the LSC_Post-Season Tournament.  On April 27 in Amarillo, Watten allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out a career-best 12 batters in six innings of work in a 2-0 win over West Texas A&M.  That victory for the Wildcats clinched the LSC_South title, the Wildcats’ seventh since 1998.  Then on May 7 in the LSC_Post-Season Tournament, Watten threw 7 2/3 innings of two-hit baseball in a 3-0 win over Central Oklahoma.  Watten allowed just two walks and struck out seven Bronchos in the Wildcats’ victory.   At the plate, Watten raised his average 61 points over his freshman average (.290) as he was one of 11 Wildcat regulars to hit better than .300 in 2007.  Watten had 19 multi-hit games and finished fourth on the team in RBI_with 36.  Watten was voted first team all-LSC_South Division as both a pitcher and utility player and was also voted the LSC_South Division Player of the Year.  He was a second team NCAA_all-region selection as a starting pitcher by ABCA / Rawlings, and he was also a second team academic all-District VI selection by ESPN_The Magazine and CoSIDA.  2006 (Freshman):  Hit .290 with 37 RBI_as a freshman.  Played in 59 games (58 starts) as a freshman for the Wildcats.  Had six three-hit games as a freshman, including in both games of an April 21 doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico.  Had a career-best five RBI_game on March 20 in a win over SW_Oklahoma State.  High school:  A first team Class 5A all-state performer and District 6-5A Offensive Player of the Year in 2005, Watten hit .439 with 29 RBI for the Cowboys, who finished 30-11 in 2005 and lost to eventual Class 5A semifinalist Lubbock Monterey in the Region I-5A semifinals.  Watten led the Metroplex and set a school single-season record with 19 doubles, and he was named to the Dallas Morning-News all-area first team.  He was also named to the North Texas 5A/4A all-star team.  He started at shortstop for the North in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches’ Association All-Star Game in June 2006, doubling in the fourth inning.  Personal:  His younger brother, Cameron, is a freshman on the 2008 ACU baseball team.  Born 16 December 1986.  2005 graduate of Coppell High School.
