Wildcats Travel to Stillwater for Cowboy Jamboree

The ACU cross country teams will be in Stillwater, Okla. on Saturday for the venerable Cowboy Jamboree, one of the oldest continuous XC meets in the U.S., having been run since 1937. The races will be contested at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course, arguably the finest course in the country and home to the NCAA Championships in 2022 and will host again in 2027.
"This weekend we compete at the Cowboy Jamboree, our toughest competition to date," said head coach Wayne Angel. "Our last two outings demonstrated appreciable improvement. We've had a strong 12-day training block where we have gotten stronger, built up some confidence, and worked on our mental toughness."
In the women's race, Oklahoma State, who was 12th at last year's national championship, will host two powerhouse teams – BYU, who was 2nd at the national championship last year and is currently ranked #2 in the Mountain Region, and New Mexico, last year's 4th place finisher at the national championship and currently ranked #1 in the Mountain Region. Other regionally ranked teams competing are SMU (#3 in the South Central Region); Oklahoma (#6 in the Midwest Region); and Stephen F. Austin (#8 in the South Central Region). Also in the competition will be Odessa College, the defending NJCAA champion.
On the men's side there will be three schools currently ranked #1 in their region – host Oklahoma State, #1 in the Midwest Region and defending national champions; New Mexico, the national runners-up last year and the top ranked team in the Mountain Region; and Oregon, the 5th place finisher at the national meet last year and the top-ranked men's team in the West Region. Other regionally ranked teams include: SFA (#3 in the South Central); Tulsa (#3 in the Midwest); TCU (#5 in South Central Region); Oklahoma (#8 in the Midwest); and Lamar (#12 in the South Central). ACU will be joined by only one other United Athletic Conference team in both the men's and women's race – Central Arkansas.
Coach Angel on the goal for this week's race: "I am looking for pack integrity this week. Closing the gap between our 1st and 5th runners and competing as one team. Most importantly, we need to embrace the challenge. We are racing against some of the best teams in America. It will provide a great experience for us as we prepare for the championship season. I'm very excited to see how our Wildcats compete this weekend."
The men's 8k race begins at 8:15 a.m. and the women's 6k race at 8:50 a.m. on Saturday.
