Buech, Hargrove Power ACU to Fifth Place at Bayou City Collegiate Classic

HOUSTON — Abilene Christian men's golf's Luis Buech and Rex Hargrove each registered career bests to power the Wildcats to fifth place at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic on Tuesday. Buech and Hargrove each finished below par at Westwood Golf Club as ACU notched its third consecutive top-five performance at the event.
The Wildcats scored 2-under 862, marking their fifth effort at or below par since the start of last season. Buech came in 10th place at 5-under 211, and Hargrove followed in a tie for 11th at 3-under 213. Buech surpassed his previous 54-hole career best by two strokes, while Hargrove closed under par for the first time.
Following a Monday weather delay, ACU completed the second and third rounds on Tuesday. The Wildcats tied for fourth in the field on par 3s and placed fifth on par 5s at 16-under. Their 58 birdies tied for second-most. Host Rice topped the leaderboard at 14-under 850, while Texas' Sterling Hurd and Middle Tennessee's Connor Henry shared the individual title at 10-under 206.
The Wildcats return to the course at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Oct. 4-6 at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas.
Buech and Hargrove were also the Wildcats' top performers at last week's season-opening Canadian Collegiate Invitational. Buech rose 20 spots on Tuesday after tying for 30th place through one round. He closed the second round at 4-under 68 before shooting 1-under 71 in the final round.
Buech displayed his consistency in the second round, scoring above par on just one hole with five birdies. He added three birdies in the final round, leading ACU and tying for fifth in the field with 14 total. Buech tied for sixth on par 5s at 6-under.
Hargrove, a Houston native, scored 1-over 73 in the second round before rebounding at 1-under 71 in the third round. He had seven birdies between the final two rounds and recorded just six bogeys, the fewest among the Wildcats. Hargrove tied for eighth on par 4s at 1-under and tied for 10th with 13 birdies.
Freshman Cooper Watson, making his collegiate debut while competing as an individual, tied for 36th place at 4-over 220. After carding a 2-over 74 in the second round, he delivered a 1-under 71 final round featuring five birdies. Watson reached below par with birdies on his final two holes.
Jack Hollingsed, making his third appearance at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, rose 14 spots to tie for 40th at 5-over 221. He shot 1-over 73 in the second and third rounds and picked up seven birdies along the way. Hollingsed paced ACU with 34 pars.
Maximilian Björnström tied for 42nd place at 6-over 222, closing with rounds of 4-over 76 and 1-over 73. He birded three holes in a row in the third round, good for a 3-under 33 on the back nine. The Höllviken, Sweden product tied Hargrove for 10th with 13 birdies.
Kade McDonough rounded out the lineup in a draw for 52nd at 8-over 224. He totaled 10 birdies with a first-round eagle, scoring 7-over 79 and 3-over 75 in the second and third rounds, respectively.
