DALLAS — Abilene Christian men's golf's Cooper Watson registered the lowest 54-hole score by a Wildcat freshman since 2012 with a 5-under 211 effort at the Trinity Forest Invitational. He carded a 1-under 71 in the final round at Trinity Forest Golf Club on Tuesday to tie for 12th place while ACU closed in 11th at 1-over 865.
Watson logged the top performance in ACU's Division I era while scoring below par in each round in Dallas. It's the lowest 54-hole score by a freshman since Corbin Renner shot 2-under 208 at the Dallas Baptist Classic in 2012.Â
Watson also marked the lowest distance to par by a freshman since Alex Carpenter scored 11-under 205 at the 2010 Lone Star Conference Championship. Carpenter went on to achieve an NCAA-record 20 tournament championships in a legendary career.
The Wildcats scored 1-under 287 in the final round. East Tennessee State topped the leaderboard at 32-under 832, while Chattanooga's Evan Rogers captured the individual title at 16-under 200. ACU tied for sixth on par 5s at 19-under and totaled 52 birdies.
The Wildcats return to action at the inaugural Abilene Christian Intercollegiate on Oct. 19-21, broadcast live on the Golf Channel from Halbert National in Granbury, Texas.
