ABILENE – Construction crews have started work on replacing the track at Elmer Gray Stadium in a project which will elevate ACU’s world-renowned track and field program and provide a top-of-the-line surface for competitors.
On Monday workers began removing the purple-colored track, which was the original surface from 2015 when ACU opened the new Elmer Gray Stadium. Crews will also improve the subsurface over the summer with completion estimated for mid-July.
The project, which is partly donor-funded, includes adding sprint shoots on the back stretch to match the shoots on the west side of the track. Event runways will also be redone. The new surface will be primarily gray with exchange zones in purple.
In a separate phase of construction, a new video scoreboard will be installed to raise the overall fan and student-athlete experience for soccer and track and field.
Elmer Gray Stadium is the home of ACU soccer and track and field and also hosts the annual Wes Kittley Invitational as well as high school regional track meets, drawing thousands of fans each year.
From 1955-2014, track and field events were held at “old” Elmer Gray Stadium on the site which is currently occupied by football’s Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium.
Elmer Gray (’32) was the first Wildcat to compete in the Olympic Trials (as a halfmiler in 1932).
