HOPEWELL, N.J. - Abilene Christian women's basketball's Meredith Mayes became the first Wildcat to be named to the midseason watch list for the 2026 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats, the organization announced Wednesday morning.
Mayes is one of 15 players representing 26 "mid-major" college basketball conferences to land on the watch list. She is the only student-athlete from the Western Athletic Conference to make the cut. The winner of the award will be announced in April.
The Bixby, Okla. native, currently sidelined with an injury, has established herself as one of the most efficient players in the nation. Mayes ranks second in the country with a .682 field goal percentage, connecting on 101 of 148 shots. She's fourth in the WAC with 15.2 points per game and sixth with 7.9 rebounds per contest.
Mayes is the conference leader with 3.3 offensive rebounds per game while ranking fourth in steals per game (2.5) and sixth in free throw percentage (.714). She is 10th in blocked shots per game (0.8). In conference action, Mayes is second in scoring (17.3) and fourth in rebounds (8.0) per contest. She is third and fifth in steals and blocks, respectively.
Mayes has scored in the double digits in all but one game this season while bringing down at least six rebounds in all but two matchups. She has sunk at least half her field goal attempts in all but one game. Mayes has recorded four double-doubles this season and was named the Jersey Mike's A Sub Above WAC Player of the Week on Dec. 8, 2025. She was tabbed to the Preseason All-WAC Team.
The Becky Hammon Award was established in 2020 in honor of the Las Vegas Aces head coach, who was a three-time All-American at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999. Hammon was a two-time All-WNBA First Team honoree and a six-time All-Star.
Hammon became the second female coach in NBA history when she joined the San Antonio Spurs staff in 2014. She is the only woman to be the head coach for an NBA Summer League team and the only female member of an NBA All-Star coaching staff. Hammon is a three-time WNBA champion at the helm of the Aces.
