The Abilene Christian men's tennis team plays to make its third WAC championship match in four years at
the conference tournament starting Friday afternoon in Arlington.
ACU enters as the No. 3 seed and will face No. 2 seed -- and tournament host -- UT Arlington in the semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center. The championship match is Saturday at 2 p.m.
"We're at a point in the season where you don't have that much time to let yourself go on a high or a low. It's time to get out there and compete," said head coach Juan Nunez. "To an extent it allows everyone to relax a little because you are no longer focused on very specific things. It's more of how am I going to be the tougher guy on the court, how am I going to be the best competitor, and give my team a point."
The Wildcats and Mavericks squared off twice this spring with UTA winning by scores of 5-1 on February 27 in Abilene, and 4-3 on April 3 in Arlington.
"Both matches we played against them this season, at points me and their coach walked to each other and we sat down and watched. You had four or five courts in the third set. You get to enjoy coaching those matches where the guys are doing everything they can and it comes down to one or two points on each court. That's what's happened the last couple times [against UTA]."
One of ACU's more consistent players has been senior
Benjamin McDonald, who has won three of his last four matches at No. 6 singles - including a three-set victory at UTA.
The Wildcats No. 1 player -- senior
Daniel Morozov -- has compiled a 7-4 doubles record and 6-9 singles mark this season.
"The doubles, to me, is going to be a huge, huge deal," said Nunez. "We haven't played our best in doubles against them. Find a way to get going from the beginning, steal that doubles point and hopefully add some pressure because the last few times we've played them they have played from ahead."
