ARLINGTON – Abilene Christian's very own Dash Albus has been selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. Albus was chosen in the 19th round as the 557th overall pick.
The left-handed pitcher left a mark being one of five players that were selected from the Western Athletic Conference. Other WAC schools with players selected include Sacramento State, California Baptist and two from Grand Canyon University.
Born to Donna and Damon Albus in Abilene, Albus grew up locally as a big part of the Abilene community. Participating in local little league, as well as playing and graduating from Wylie High School. He was able to continue his collegiate baseball career at Temple College for two seasons. Albus came back home to represent the Wildcats in the 2024 season. In his 19 appearances, Albus had an 8.06 ERA with 26 strikeouts. Albus creates a new precedent for ACU as an Abilenian entering the big leagues.
"We were fired up to see Dash selected in the MLB draft by the Kansas City Royals," said head coach Rick McCarty. "There are so many exciting layers to his selection. The neat one for me is that he is a product of the Big Country. He grew up here in Abilene, played in the Wylie Little League system, graduated from Wylie High School and got drafted as an ACU Wildcat. The best part is that his journey to the big leagues is just beginning. He will have the entire community supporting him each step of the way."
McCarty now has five Wildcats under his direction at ACU to be selected in the MLB Draft, including one free agent. In the 2019 draft, Luis Trevino was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2023, Riley Bauman and Logan Britt were selected by the Los Angeles Angels and Tyler Morgan by the San Diego Padres. Breck Eichelberger signed as a free agent to the Padres, and now Albus is added to the growing list.
"As a program, this is another step in the right direction," said McCarty. "Back to back years of having players selected in the draft isn't a given and starts to establish consistency in talent. We fully expect this to be the norm as we continue to build momentum."
