HARLINGEN – Fifth-seeded Abilene Christian avenged an earlier loss with a 4-1 win over fourth-seeded Seattle in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament on Thursday.
The Wildcats meet top-seeded Grand Canyon in a noon semifinal match on Friday.
"Proud of our effort today," said ACU Head Coach
Bryan Rainwater. "It was super hot out there, but getting the doubles point was a key factor! Seattle gave us a run in singles but I'm super proud of the girls for fighting through. Getting the quick win in singles from Andy got the momentum going for us, and then Maria and Libby kept that momentum to close out the match! Back to work tomorrow."
ACU won the doubles point with
Maria Cascos and
Masha Vrsalovic winning 6-4 on Court 1 after
Libby Blair and
Maryjoe Crisologo finished off a 6-3 in on Court 2.
Andrea Guerrero and
Olivia Sears were leading on Court 3, 5-4, when the match was suspended.
Guerrero put ACU ahead 2-0 with a quick 6-3, 6-2 win over Lola Tavcar on the fifth line of singles. The Redhawks pulled to within 2-1 with their lone win, but ACU won the next two matches.
Cascos bounced back from the first-set loss to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and
Libby Blair clinched the team win similarly at No. 6, taking the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Crisologo and Vrsalovic were in the third set of their singles matches.
