SEATTLE – Abilene Christian finished off its regular season with a 5-2 win at Seattle on Sunday.
The win appears to have placed the Wildcats in the WAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed, which means ACU would play Thursday, April 27, at noon in the first round of the Tournament in Arlington.
Seattle led early in doubles and the Redhawks put early pressure on the Cats in singles but couldn't withstand ACU.
"This was a really hard match for us to win and but we're playing the way we need to be playing at the right time," said ACU Head Coach Bryan Rainwater. "Seattle came out strong in doubles but we won at 2 and 3. And then they came out fighting in singles, but
Olivia Sears won at No. 3 and I think that just gave us the confidence we needed. We played good tennis all the way down the line from there."
After going down 1-0, the Wildcats claimed the doubles point with wins by
Maryjoe Crisologo and
Maria Cascos at No. 2 and
Eva Arranz and
Andrea Guerrero at No. 3.
SU tied the match with a win at No. 1 singles but Sears got a straight-set win on the third line to retake the team lead. The Redhawks tied the score again before Cascos got the Cats back on top with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4.
Arranz scored a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 6 to seal the victory for ACU. Guerrero tacked on another win on the fifth line.
The official WAC bracket will be announced later this week.
