Tennis to honor Chhabra, Montanes Sunday

ABILENE – Abilene Christian wraps up the regular season and celebrates seniors Savan Chhabra and Matias Montanes when the Wildcats host New Mexico State at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Chhabra, a senior from Irving, has 13 doubles and eight singles wins heading into the finale. Montanes, originally recruited to play at ACU, has served as a student assistant after a devastating injury prior to his freshman season. Both will be honored after the match.

The Wildcats enter the match a 12-10 overall and 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. They can wrap up a first-round bye in the WAC Tournament with a victory.

Cesar Barranquero leads the team with 10 singles wins this season. Dario Kmet has nine wins, including a 4-0 mark in conference matches, at No. 1 singles. Kmet is the two-time reigning WAC Player of the Week.

Chhabra and Ethan Scribner have a 13-7 record as doubles partners this season.

The Cats played New Mexico State in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in February with ACU securing a 4-1 win. ACU was up a set in the two unfinished singles matches.

The Aggies come to town at 3-16 overall and 1-3 in the league after falling at Texas-Rio Grande Valley and Texas-Arlington last weekend.

Luca Fe D'Ostiani leads NMSU with six singles wins while Jordy Visser and Yehor Opanasenko have seven wins as doubles partners.
