ABILENE – Off to a 10-3 start for the second time in the last three seasons, the ACU baseball team embarks on the conference portion of the schedule for the first time this weekend. The Wildcats open WAC play with a familiar opponent in Stephen F. Austin, and the three-game series gets started on Friday night at 6:05 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field. Saturday's middle game gets started at 3:05 p.m., while Sunday's finale gets underway at 1:05 p.m. Friday night's game airs on ESPN+, while the rest of the weekend will be set on WAC International.

ACU STORYLINES

  • A 3-1 WEEKEND – ACU won three of the four games against Houston Christin last weekend, earning a 13-3, eight-run, walk-off run rule victory in the opener and following a doubleheader sweep on Saturday (12-6, 9-5). HCU came back in the final inning to top ACU on Sunday, 8-7, salvaging a game on the weekend.
  • HITTER OF THE WEEK – Senior Grayson Tatrow led the way for ACU last weekend, earning him WAC Hitter of the Week honors. The veteran outfielder led ACU with a .500 batting average, going 7-14 in four games. He slugged .786 with a double and a homer for a total of 11 bases for the weekend, and drove in a remarkable 13 runs and tallied a .529 on-base percentage. Tatrow drove in five runs in game two of the series on three hits, and drove in four runs in the finale on Sunday. The veteran now leads ACU with 15 runs driven in this season and 10 walks.
  • LAST WEEKEND'S NUMBERS – Tatrow led ACU offensively for the weekend, and overall the 'Cats hit .328 with 41 runs on 42 hits. Garrett Williams also tallied seven hits with a .412 average, while Miller Ladusau and Tanner Tweedt each drove in six runs. Breck Eichelberger put together a 1.80 earned run average in his five-inning start, while Max Huffling and Adam Stephenson each threw three scoreless innings on the mound.
  • PRESEASON POLL / AWARDS – The Western Athletic Conference announced the preseason poll and the preseason all-conference selections for the upcoming season, and the Wildcats are picked tied for fourth in the 13-team league. Junior Bash Randle and seniors Grayson Tatrow and Tanner Tweedt were all named to the all-conference list as well prior to the season. Grand Canyon was picked to win the conference, followed by Sam Houston and California Baptist. ACU tied with UTRGV and Sacramento State for fourth overall.
  • BACK TO ONE BIG LEAGUE – The WAC is moving back to a traditional format in 2023. All 13 teams will be in one standings list, and there will be no divisions this season. There will be 30 league games against 10 of the 12 possible opponents, and the 2023 WAC Tournament will start May 24 in Mesa, Ariz.
  • A GLANCE AT THE TOUGH SCHEDULE – The 2023 slate encompasses 55 games, including 30 Western Athletic Conference games (10 three-game series), and another 25 non-conference games (four series and 11 single games). Overall the team will host 35 times at Crutcher Scott Field, the most in the Rick McCarty era. ACU will play 21 games against teams that finished in the top 100 in RPI in 2022, nine games against Power 5 opponents (Oklahoma, TCU x2, Baylor x2, Nebraska, Texas Tech x2, Texas), and seven games against 2022 regional teams (Oklahoma, Southeast Missouri, Oral Roberts, TCU, Texas Tech, Texas, Grand Canyon). There are five first-time opponents on the slate (Southeast Missouri, Sacramento State, Nebraska, California Baptist, Utah Tech), and there are four home games against Power 5 opponents (Nebraska, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor).
  • THE COACH – Head Coach Rick McCarty enters his fifth season as the head man at ACU, and earned his 100th career win on Opening Day. He sits at 109 career victories in his time at ACU, which includes a regular-season championship and a runner-up finish at the tournament.

SCOUTING STEPHEN F. AUSTIN (6-7, 0-0 WESTERN ATHLETIC)

  • The Lumberjacks are coming off an 11-7, extra-inning win over Prairie View A&M on Wednesday night, and are 5-3 away from Nacogdoches this season.
  • SFA is led offensively by Peyton Parker's .417 batting average, while Alex Rodgers leads the way with five home runs and 15 runs driven in.
  • Skyler Jaco has a team-best 2.77 earned run average and a team-high 14 strikeouts on the mound.
