ABILENE– Abilene Christian dropped the final game of their series with Utah Tech on Sunday afternoon at Poly Wells Field. The Wildcats were able to fight off a potential run-rule loss and put up nine runs in the game, but the Trailblazers scored 14 runs through the first five innings to earn the series sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A two-run homerun in the top of the first kicked off the scoring as UT took the 2-0 lead.
- Sammie Shelander launched a two-run bomb to tie the game up, 2-2, in the bottom of the first.
- The Trailblazers put up three runs in the top of the third inning to retake the lead, 5-2.
- Shelander and Avery Miloch hit back-to-back jacks in the bottom of the third to get back within one, 5-4.
- A six-run fourth and a three-run fifth inning put Utah Tech up 14-4 headed to the bottom of the fifth.
- The Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and Bubba Rote hit a bases-clearing double to get back within seven runs and avoid the run-rule.
- ACU put up two more runs in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't overcome the large lead of UTU.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Miloch's homerun was her team-leading seventh of the year, matching her homerun total from last season.
- Shelander extended her team-leading RBI total to 17 with three in the game, matching a season-high for RBI in a game.
- Olivia Taylor has put together a hitting streak of five games.
- Catrin Hoffman extended her on-base streak to seven games.
ON DECK:
- The Wildcats will be on the road for a midweek at Texas Tech on Wednesday and will return home to Poly Wells next weekend for a series with Southern Utah.
