SAN ANTONIO –
Olivia Sears scored a straight-set win at second singles on Monday to highlight Abilene Christian's 4-1 loss at the hands of undefeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
Sears defeated Naomi Moi McKenzie, 6-2, 7-5.
The Wildcats had a few other close matches that went unfinished.
Maria Cascos and
Eva Arranz were in the third set of their singles matches at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively.
Masha Vrsalovic and Sears were down 5-4 in their first-line doubles match when the Islanders clinched the doubles point and ended their comeback.
"Overall, we gave a really good effort," said ACU Head Coach Bryan Rainwater. "We started slow but picked up the energy and the match moved on. We did a great job at 2 and really had chances to win at 4, 5 and 6. We definitely have some work to do, but Corpus is a very good team and I'm happy that we had chances."
The Wildcats open Western Athletic Conference action this weekend, hosting Texas-Arlington Friday at 1 p.m. and Texas-Rio Grande Valley Sunday at 11 a.m.
