Wildcats drop two at GCU on Saturday

PHOENIX– Abilene Christian was able to put runs up on the board over both games on Saturday, but the team came up just short in both outings. The Wildcats avoided a run-rule in game one against Colorado State but fell 12-5. The team was able to get a run up on the board to open the game against Grand Canyon, but the Lopes answered with a four-run second inning and came away with a 6-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1
  • The Wildcats went up 2-0 early on the Rams scoring on an error and an RBI walk from Bubba Rote.
  • Colorado State put together a massive second inning, plating eight runs and forcing two Wildcat pitching changes.
  • ACU got a run back in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from Miranda Lista, cutting the lead to 8-3.
  • The Rams added a single run in the top of the third and another three runs in the top of the fifth to push their lead to 12-3.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Avery Miloch launched her sixth homerun of the year to cut the lead to 12-5 and avoid the run rule.
  • Neither team scored in the final two innings as CSU held on for the win.

Game 2
  • ACU was once again first to score in their afternoon game as well, as Catrin Hoffman drove in a run with a single.
  • Grand Canyon answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun to tie the game.
  • The Lopes put together a big second inning, scoring four runs and taking the 5-1 lead.
  • Hoffman drove in her second run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the third to cut the lead to 5-2.
  • GCU put the final run of the game on the board on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to reach the final score, 6-2.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Hoffman's two-RBI game against GCU was her first multi-RBI game of the year. She led the Wildcats on the day with three total RBI.
  • Miloch's pinch-hit homerun against CSU tied her for the team lead in RBI for the year with 13.
  • Mercedes Eichelberger went 3-3 at the plate against GCU, also reaching base on a hit by pitch, to bring her team-leading hit total to 24 on the year.
