NACOGDOCHES – Stephen F. Austin hit eight free throws in the second overtime and knocked off Abilene Christian Saturday afternoon, 89-82.
The game featured nine ties and eight lead changes and had moments of drama one would expect in a double-overtime contest.
ACU freshman Payton Hull scored on a layup with 21 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 63-63 and the Wildcats got a stop on the final SFA possession to send the game to overtime.
The first extra period started well for ACU with Bella Earle scoring five points in a 7-0 ACU run for a 70-63 lead.
The Cats had a two-point lead and the ball with 40 seconds to go in the frame but missed a three-pointer and fouled Destini Lombard with 32 seconds to go. Lombard made both free throws to tie the game and ACU missed a three-pointer with three seconds left.
ACU took an early lead but misfired on their next four possessions while SFA built a 86-78 lead.
Hull finished the game with 25 points and five steals while Addison Martin added 20 points. Aspen Thornton scored 16 points and Earle finished with 15 points, second rebounds and five assists before fouling out midway through the second overtime.
The Wildcats, now 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference, play at TCU on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
