Brandenburg collects postseason honors as Wildcats shine on final day in Seattle

SEATTLE – The ACU track and field programs wrapped up the WAC Championships on Saturday, claiming six conference crowns along the way. Annina Brandenburg was voted by the league's coaches as the Women's Field Athlete of the Year and also tied for the highest individual scorer of the meet.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • Brandenburg (54.55m/178' 11") and Zoe Burleson (51.47m/168' 10") gave the Wildcats a 1-2 finish in the discus throw, with Brandenburg picking up her second individual crown in as many days. 
  • Zoe Spinn posted a mark of 1.73m (5' 8") on her final attempt of the day in the high jump to take second place. 
  • Athan Huelskamp found his way to the podium with a seventh-place distance of 48.84m (160' 3") in the men's discus. 
  • Ella Antilla hauled in her second straight conference title in the triple jump, doing so with a mark of 12.79m (41' 11 ½"). 
  • Grant Baker took the bronze in the pole vault, while Cole Newman ended up in sixth place to give the Wildcats two podium performers for the event. 
  • In the men's high jump, J.J. Ply cleared 2.04m (6' 8 ¼") to claim fourth place, and he later collected fifth in the javelin throw with a distance of 55.60m (182' 5"). 
  • The men's 4x100 relay team of Jeremy King, Jamal January, Addison Franklin and Jack Marshall took sixth with a time of 40.68. 
  • The ACU women, comprised of Taylor Tolen, Savannah Walker, Amy Ambelang and D'anna Smith, followed with a conference title after a mark 45.57. 
  • January was ACU's lone individual winner on the men's side after earning the 110 hurdles crown with a time of 13.97 to highlight a strong event for the Purple and White. Ply (14.14) came in fourth, while Ryan Bornemeier (14.65) finished in seventh to give ACU three athletes on the podium. 
  • Megan Kirby gave the Wildcats a fourth-place performance in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.92. 
  • Jack Marshall earned fifth place in the 100 with a 10.51 before medaling in the 200 with a time of 21.09. 
  • Garrison Shindler (1:53.11) and Cooper Goggans (1:54.36) ended the day in third and fifth respectively in the 800. 
  • January turned in a second-place finish in the 400 hurdles, doing so with a time of 52.50. 
  • Taylor Tolen had a huge day for ACU, collecting the individual crown in both the 100 (11.36) and 200 (23.72). D'anna Smith (11.93, seventh) and Mya Hendson (11.99, eighth) gave the Wildcats three podium performers in the 100, while Walker (24.37, sixth) and Smith (24.79, eighth) got on the podium in the 200. 
  • Briahna Gerlach (16:25.21) and Irene Rono (16:29.29) came in fifth and sixth respectively in the 5K to earn some late points for the Wildcats.
 
UP NEXT: 
  • A handful of Wildcats will be headed to the NCAA Regionals in Fayetteville, Ark., which are set to take place from May 25-28 on the campus of the University of Arkansas. The qualifying list is set to be released next week.
