Wildcats split doubleheader on final day in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas – The Wildcats earned the 5-1 win over the Miners to close out opening weekend with a split on the day. After dropping their early game against Creighton, ACU came back determined in their final game of the weekend. The team jumped out to the early 4-0 lead and didn't look back to grab their second win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Game 1 | ACU vs. Creighton
  • Creighton was on the board first with a solo shot in the bottom of the second.
  • The Bluejays extended their lead in the bottom of the third with a three-run homer from Nielsen.
  • ACU threatened in the top of the fourth and were able to load the bases with two outs. A wild pitch brought home Miranda Davila for the Wildcats lone run.
  • Creighton put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 9-1 win.
 
Game 2 | ACU vs. UTEP
  •  After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Wildcats put together a four-run third inning to take the early lead.
  • With the bases loaded and two outs, Paige Harris singled to right field to drive in a run and then another run came in on an errant throw from UTEP.
  • Mercedes Eichelberger sent one back up the middle to bring in another run for the Wildcats followed by Shaylee Alani reaching on an error allowing the fourth run to score.
  • Rose Gonzales doubled in the top of the seventh to bring home Matti Reiling and push the Wildcats lead to 5-0.
  • The Miners put a run up in the bottom of the seventh but Sidney Holman-Mansell shut the door for the complete game win.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  •  Holman-Mansell added six strikeouts to her weekend total and leads the Wildcats with 19 on the season.
  • Mid-year transfer Matti Reiling is looking comfortable in purple as she led the team with a .444 hitting percentage on the weekend.
  • The Wildcats have four players hitting above .300 after the first weekend of action.
 
ON DECK: 
  • ACU will be back in action next weekend in Melissa, Texas as part of the Tracey Beard College Classic hosted by North Texas. The Wildcats will play five games over three days.
