Soccer welcomes Texas State for home opener

ABILENE – The Wildcat soccer team is itching to get back on the pitch after a tough game last Sunday at Texas Tech, and now, for the first time this season, ACU can take the field at Elmer Gray Stadium. The Wildcats (1-2) welcome in the Texas State Bobcats from the Sun Belt Conference on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. in the 2021 home opener. ACU opens a stretch of six straight games at home, including five in the month of September. You can watch Sunday's game on the WAC Digital Network.

ACU STORYLINES

  • MOST IN ACU HISTORY: Fifth-year senior Christina Arteaga has now played and started the most games in ACU history. The Pflugerville native has played and started 84 times in her illustrious career, passing two greats in Brie Buschman and Julie Coppedge for the most by a Wildcat ever.
  • BACK HOME: The Wildcats return home for the first time this season, and it has been a friendly place to ACU over the year. The 'Cats are 17-3-4 at Elmer Gray Stadium since the start of the 2018 season. ACU went undefeated at home in 2019 (6-0-2) as well.
  • PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE: One of the most decorated players in program history, Christina Arteaga, was named preseason all-WAC prior to the start of the season. Arteaga, the seventh-ever four-time first-team all-conference player in Southland Conference history, has 90 career points (35 goals, and 20 assists). The assists rank No. 1 in program history, while the goals and points rank second behind Andrea Carpenter, who played from 2010-13.
  • PRESEASON PICK: ACU was picked second in the new WAC Southwest Division, which features five Texas teams and Chicago State. SFA was picked to win the league, with Lamar tied for second with the Wildcats. UTRGV was picked fourth, Sam Houston was picked fifth, and Chicago State was picked sixth.

SCOUTING TEXAS STATE

  • The Bobcats (1-1-1) take on No. 13 Rice on Thursday in Houston before coming to Abilene on Sunday.
  • TXST fell 2-1 at SFA last Sunday. Kiara Gonzales tallied her first goal of the season in the first half to extend her points streak to three consecutive matches. Both Bailey Peschel and Kamaria Williams were credited with an assist on the tally for their second and first assists of the season, respectively. Katelyn Chrisman made her second straight start in goal and made four saves on the afternoon.
