ABILENE -- Abilene Christian track and field will play host to its semi-annual midweek regional meet, the Oliver Jackson Twilight, all day Wednesday at Elmer Gray Stadium. This year's field includes teams from Angelo State, Lubbock Christian, Midwestern State, South Plains, Texas A&M-Commerce, West Texas A&M and neighboring Hardin-Simmons and McMurry.
Events start as early as 10 a.m. with the javelin throw, but the track events won't commence until 4 p.m. ACU's seniors will be recognized at approximately 6:30 p.m., and following that ceremony will be the 1600-meter relay plus a five-event distance carnival (1,500m, 3K steeplechase, 5K and combined-gender 10K).
ACU's senior honorees are Ross Dean, Sean Germany, Justin Haines, Mackenzie West Knight, Hannah Marut, Conner Miller, Cole Palka, Payton Wall and Avery Williams.
Knight was one of four student-athletes Saturday at Baylor's Michael Johnson Invitational to set a personal record and climb up the school's record book. She recorded a pole vault PR leap of 3.76 meters (12-4.00) to move into ninth place on the all-time performer list. Sprinter Taylor Tolen (11.66) and hammer thrower Thomas Wilson III (55.09m / 180-09) also cracked the top-10 in their respective events, but in the 5K sophomore Irene Rono shot all the way to second with a first-place time of 16:22.87. Only Alexandria Hackett has run a faster 5K in school history (16:03.83).
Rono, who has won six times this school year, is entered in the 1,500-meter run for Wednesday night, while another Wildcat champion from Baylor, thrower Tyler Richardson, is slated to compete in the discus, hammer and shot put.
Richardson's Waco victory came in the premier shot put, which was his first win outside the Southland Conference Championships and third of his collegiate career. His PR distance of 17.72m (58-01.75) was recorded on his sixth and final attempt to beat Baylor sophomore Nicholas Hardan by .04m (1.50 inches).
Zoe Spinn remains the highest-ranked Wildcat on the NCAA performance list. She is No. 12 nationally in the high jump with a mark of 1.79 meters (5-10.5), which she recorded earlier this month at the Baylor Invitational.
