Adams' career game nears ACU record against Lamar

ABILENE — Alyssa Adams recorded her seventh double-double of the season, Anna McLeod added 13 points, but the Wildcat women's basketball team fell Wednesday night at home to the Lamar Cardinals, 71-65. Adams finished with 17 points and a career-high 22 rebounds, one away from tying an ACU Division I program record. The Wildcats (10-5, 3-3 SLC) will look to respond on the road in Beaumont against the same Cardinals (5-9, 4-2 SLC) in their second meeting of the week.

Turning Point: The final six-and-a-half minutes.

• ACU tied it up at 56 with 7:30 left on an Alice Stevenson three-pointer, and then Stevenson gave ACU the lead with a free throw a possession later. However, Lamar, who constantly answered when they had to, won the final 6:30 of the game, 15-8. The Wildcats turned it over four times in those final minutes and Lamar walked away with the win.

• Alyssa Adams asserted herself early, scoring in the paint to put ACU up 4-0.
• Paige Emborsky made her first start of the year and hit a three-pointer with 2:56 left in the first to put ACU up 11-10.
• Trailing 22-17, Anna McLeod hit a triple three minutes into the second quarter to keep the deficit at two points.
• Lamar built a 33-22 lead in the second quarter, but back came the 'Cats. Madi Miller hit a three to open an 11-0 run that was finished by Anna McLeod, who scored eight straight points.
• ACU trailed 56-51 in the fourth quarter, and Adams scored in the paint followed by the three-pointer from Stevenson to tie it up.

• Adams' 17 points and 22 rebounds gave her the eighth double-double of her career. The 22 rebounds is a career-high by a mile (the previous was 12) and was one shy of Sydney Shelstead's Division I program record. The most in any game in Wildcat history is 29 by Teresa Rubart in the 1974-75 season.
• ACU is now 0-4 when trailing at halftime this season.
• Adams had over half of the team's rebounds (22 of 43).
• McLeod finished with 13 points and three assists.
• Stevenson had a career-high seven rebounds herself to go along with six points.
• Emborsky hit three from the outside in her first start in the Purple and White. The junior finished with nine.
• Turnovers were a big difference. Lamar only turned it over seven times and forced ACU into 23 turnovers.

The two teams will get a rather quick rematch on Saturday down in Beaumont, Texas. The two teams played back-to-back games in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. They do it again this year due to rescheduled games. Saturday is a men's-women's doubleheader and begins at 2 p.m. and can be heard on 102.7 The Bear.
