ACU heads to SFA and Sam Houston this weekend

ABILENE – The ACU soccer team is on the road for the first time since Aug. 29 this weekend when they head to Nacogdoches and Huntsville for a pair of WAC matches. The Wildcats (4-4-1, 2-0-1 WAC) take their undefeated conference record up against the SFA Ladyjacks on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m., and then up against the Sam Houston Bearkats to close out the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. Both games will air on ESPN+.

ACU STORYLINES

  • DOMINANT SHOWING: The Wildcats took down Chicago State last weekend, 6-1, to close out the big six-game home stand at Elmer Gray Stadium. Six Wildcats put the ball int he back of the net, including Christina Arteaga, Chayse Thorn, Laura Mauldin, Caylen Wright, Natalie Wodka, and Emily Heidman. ACU held a ridiculous 34-4 edge in shot attempts, including a 12-3 edge in shots placed on frame. The goals scored (6) were the most since Sept. 2019 when ACU scored eight times at Nicholls. It's the most goals scored at home since the team scored six against Northwestern State at Elmer Gray in 2017.
  • FAMILIAR FOES: ACU, a new member of the WAC, moved from the Southland Conference with both SFA and Sam Houston this offseason. Lamar also joined the WAC, putting all four teams in the Southwest Division. ACU tied Lamar earlier this season.
  • LEADERS: Thorn, Wodka, Heidman, Wright, and Natalie Jones all lead the way with two goals scored this season. Altogether, there have been eight different players to score. Thorn, Alyssia Anuat, and Grace Ornelas all lead the way with two assists apiece. Lily Foster has recorded 52 saves in net.

SCOUTING SFA

  • The Ladyjacks (5-5-1. 3-0-0 WAC) are in the midst of a three-game winning streak to start league play, with wins over Sam Houston, Lamar, and UTRGV.
  • Mattie Musser leads the way with three goals scored, and Madeline Talbot has played the majority of the minutes in net, and has 49 saves.

SCOUTING SAM HOUSTON

  • The Bearkats (3-7-0, 1-2-0 WAC) are coming off a 2-1 loss at Lamar and return home this weekend.
  • Caitlyn McDonald and Landri Townsend have combined for four of the five goals scored this year.
  • Abby DeLozier and Tatum Krueger have split time in net, with DeLozier leading the way with nine games played and 51 saves.
