Big soccer weekend ahead against SFA and Sam Houston

ABILENE – The ACU soccer team returns to the friendly confines of Elmer Gray Stadium for a pair of pivotal games this weekend. The Wildcats (4-7-1, 2-3-1 WAC) sit five points back of third place in the conference standings, and need to make the top three in order to claim a spot in the conference tournament. ACU hosts Sam Houston on Friday at 7 p.m. before closing the weekend with SFA on Sunday at 1 p.m., both of whom sit ahead of ACU in the standings. Both games air on ESPN+.

ACU STORYLINES

  • WAC POSITIONING: The Wildcats have seven points in the league's Southwest Division standings, and currently are five points behind third-place Sam Houston (12 points). The top three in the standings make it to the WAC Tournament in two weeks, and with four games left, an opportunity for 12 points remains. ACU is in position with games against Sam Houston (3rd place), SFA (1st place), Lamar (2nd place), and UTRGV (6th place) to gain points in the final two weekends.
  • LEADERS: Freshman Chayse Thorn leads the way with three goals scored this season, and altogether eight Wildcats have put the ball in the back of the net. Natalie Jones, Natalie Wodka, Emily Heidman, and Caylen Wright have each scored two goals this year. Lily Foster has tallied 61 saves in net this season.

SCOUTING SAM HOUSTON

  • The Bearkats (6-8-0, 4-3-0 WAC) are coming off a home split last weekend at home, falling to Lamar before beating UTRGV.
  • Landri Townsend leads the way with three goals scored, while in total eight players have scored goals. Abby DeLozier and Tatum Krueger have split time in net, with DeLozier making nine starts.

SCOUTING SFA

  • The Ladyjacks (9-5-1, 7-0-0 WAC) have won seven straight and look to clinch a regular season championship this season.
  • Colleen Feagins and Teia Haynes each lead the way with four goals scored, and 13 total players have scored SFA's 29 goals this season.
  • Madeline Talbot leads the way in net with 15 games played and 65 saves.
